Choose a short passage and slow down.
Select one paragraph or a short section of Scripture. Read the passage two or three times in a translation you understand well. If possible, write the passage reference and your answers in a notebook.
Begin with a brief prayer for honesty, understanding, and willingness to respond. The goal is not to finish quickly or prove what you already believe. The goal is to attend carefully to the text and remain open to correction and growth.
What do I see?
Start with what is actually present before deciding what it means. Read like a careful witness. Write down details that someone else could also point to in the passage.
Look for
- People, places, actions, commands, promises, questions, and results.
- Repeated words or ideas and any words that connect the parts.
- Contrasts, comparisons, changes, conditions, and cause-and-effect.
- The beginning, movement, and ending of the passage.
- Anything surprising, difficult, emphasized, or left unanswered.
What does it mean?
Interpretation asks what the passage communicated in its setting before asking what it means for you. Your observations are the evidence; context keeps that evidence from being pulled in the wrong direction.
Ask
- Who is speaking or writing, to whom, and about what situation?
- What comes immediately before and after this passage?
- What problem, question, hope, or relationship is being addressed?
- How do the repeated words, contrasts, and structure shape the main point?
- How does this passage fit within the book and the Bible’s larger Story?
How does it work?
Application is a faithful response to what the passage means. It can involve belief, repentance, gratitude, a relationship, a decision, a repeated practice, or service to another person. Avoid applications so broad that nothing changes.
Consider
- What truth should I trust, remember, or understand differently?
- What attitude, habit, fear, or action needs honest correction?
- Is there someone to love, forgive, encourage, hear, or serve?
- What is one response I can begin within the next day?
- Who could help me practice this response and remain accountable?
Return the passage to God.
Thank God for what is clear. Ask for help where obedience is difficult. Name questions that remain unresolved. If the passage exposes harm, conflict, trauma, or a decision beyond your experience, seek wise help from a trusted local pastor, mature believer, counselor, or other qualified person.
